The Project

With confidence in art as a culturally transcending medium, students from the University of Southern California decided to spread their passion for writing and film to Africa. They prompted children in middle school at St. Mary Kevin Orphanage in Uganda to create theatrical scripts incorporating their career aspirations, with the hope of inspiring creative and ambitious thought. The scripts were brought to life in Los Angeles, performed and filmed so that the children in Uganda could see their imaginations fulfilled over the internet.

The scripts crafted by the students at St. Mary Kevin Orphanage reflected the social and political climate in Uganda, where a longstanding civil war and HIV/AIDS epidemic have left many children without parents. Writing served as a creative outlet through which the children provided insight into some of the unfortunate realities of their lives as orphans in a war torn region.

Here’s the video that we presented to the kids, asking them to write scripts so that we may act them out:

Check out the “CONTENTS” section to read the scripts and watch the videos!
